Ragado AI Hi — I’m your AI underwriter. You’ve told me your trade up top. Two quick questions and I’ll show your range.
Quick start · Question 1 of 3

Count people who physically do the trade work for you, including labour-only subcontractors. Don't include office/admin staff — you'll count yourself and any working directors in the next question.

If you employ anyone — including labour-only subcontractors — UK law requires Employers’ Liability of at least £5m under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969. Ragado adds £10m as standard.

A working director wearing a tool belt counts. A director who only manages the office does not.

Employees and labour-only subcontractors combined — anyone doing physical work on site who isn’t a director/partner.

£60,000

Genuine subs invoicing you with their own Public Liability cover — not labour-only.

Most domestic work needs £1m — the default. Main contractors and local authorities often require £5m.

Demands & Needs. You decide the limits and optional covers on this page. Ragado does not provide advice or a personal recommendation — the covers you pick will be recorded on your Demands & Needs statement (ICOBS 5.2). A “Yes” doesn’t decline you — it just routes to a human underwriter for a same-day price.

All answers default to No. Tap Yes only where it applies — we’ll ask a couple of quick follow-ups.

Any claims, losses or incidents (whether insured or not) in the last 5 years?
Ever had insurance declined, cancelled, refused or applied special terms?
Any bankruptcy, insolvency, IVA or CCJs against you or the business in the last 5 years?
Any unspent criminal convictions (other than motoring) — you, partners or directors?
Any office, operations, work or exports to USA or Canada?
Anything else a reasonable underwriter would want to know?

      Example claims

      How to Make a Claim

Two scenarios based on real UK tradesman claims. Figures are typical settlement bands — not price quotations.

      Claim 01 · Customer injury

A customer slips on a wet section of floor left after a bathroom install and fractures their wrist, needing surgery and time off work.

      Typical settlement£15,000 – £75,000

      What happened

Plumber & heating engineer, £180k turnover, 2 employees. Fitting an en-suite in an occupied house. The homeowner walked in while the fitter was cleaning up, slipped on wet tile adhesive and fractured her wrist — surgery, six weeks off work, four months of physio.

      The claim

Her solicitor sent a letter of claim: pain and suffering, £4,200 lost earnings, £1,800 physio, travel costs. The letter says the fitter left the floor unsafe with no barrier or warning.

      How the policy responds

      • Public Liability responds to the personal injury claim by the homeowner.
      • Legal costs of defending or negotiating are paid as they come up.
      • The excess (typically £250) applies to the settlement, not to defence costs.
      • Cover applies after you've left site — the classic post-work injury case.
Not covered: injury to your own employees (that's EL), deliberate acts, and claims where you didn't disclose a similar prior incident.
      Claim 02 · Property damage

An electrician's new fuseboard develops a fault overnight and causes a small fire in the customer's kitchen, damaging cabinets, appliances and decoration.

      Typical settlement£8,000 – £40,000

      What happened

Electrician, £120k turnover, sole trader. Fitted a new consumer unit, Part-P certificate same day. Six hours later a loose neutral connection arced, igniting surrounding plastic. Fire damage to two kitchen cabinets, a range cooker, wallpaper, smoke damage through the ground floor.

      The claim

The homeowner's insurer subrogated — writing to the electrician to recover their settlement. Total: £24,600 kitchen replacement, £3,800 redecoration, £1,200 temporary accommodation.

      How the policy responds

      • Public Liability & Products Liability responds to property damage from the installed fuseboard.
      • Defence costs and expert-witness fees paid as they arise.
      • Cover applies whether the fault appeared on the day or later.
      • Only the excess (typically £250) comes from your pocket.
Not covered: the cost of re-fitting the fuseboard itself — that's workmanship, outside cover. Claims from USA/Canada work and deliberate installation defects are also excluded.

Examples only — not a promise of cover. Every real claim is decided on its facts against the policy documents in force at the time.

      Questions we get a lot

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I legally need Employers' Liability?+

If you employ anyone — including labour-only subcontractors — yes, £5m is the legal minimum. We give you £10m as standard.

How much Public Liability should I buy?+

Most domestic work is fine on £1m — the default. Main contractors and local authorities usually require £5m. Our tool shows what limits similar trades choose so you can decide what fits your contracts — Ragado doesn't give personal advice or a recommendation.

      Are labour-only subcontractors covered?+

Yes — declared labour-only subbies are covered under Employers' Liability. Bona-fide subs need their own PL.

How does the monthly Direct Debit work?+

Provided by Close Brothers Premium Finance, 10 monthly instalments, 4.5% interest per annum. Full pre-contract credit information (SECCI) shown before you sign. FCA-regulated under CONC.
